Hey hey hey !! It’s finally Friday y’all and the last full work week before Thanksgiving is almost o v e r ! So I’m jumping right into it today! We are quickly embarking on what I like to call “eating season” and if you aren’t careful it can hit you square in the face. So today I’m taking a break from talking about the outfits you wear while you eat and am switching gears to talk about the cutest outfit you’ll wear while you work off the lbs you pack on from the mac n cheese, pie and other delicious goodies and some ways to get them off. Karen Kane LIFE recently launched at Belk earlier this fall and I’ve been pretty obsessed with it. The prints are so gorgeous and make it super east to wear out and about before or after your workout (as if you weren’t going to anyways). But really, sometimes I go out in my gym garb and feel like a total street rat and other times I know the prints and the pieces are cute enough where I can still feel presentable wearing them out in public. The pants fit so well and come up just high enough and stay in place so I’m not constantly adjusting them during my workout. This windbreaker jacket has got to be my favorite piece! It is long enough to cover my rear, loose enough not to stick to me after my work out and strong enough to brace the wind when making the trek back to my car. (Let me just clarify, it is a true windbreaker- it’s not warm so don’t think it will by any means protect you from a 30 degree day, but you’ll be good in a chilly, windy condition.) This palm fran print is my current favorite because it’s dark and cool enough to wear any time of the year but this dark floral print is gaining favor. It’s cute and girly and pairs well with this blush anorak.
As I mentioned earlier, eating season can really hit you in the face. For Wes and I, Thanskgiving is a marathon of four meals in a 24 hour period. We start with dinner Wednesday night, then breakfast Thursday AM, a short but much needed break to drive 2 hours up the highway, then lunch and dinner a few hours later. Whew! I think I gained 5 pounds just thinking about it. Because I do love Thanskgiving and all the carb, cheese and sugar filled goodness that goes along with it, I discipline myself in the days leading up to the glorious feast. Below are some tips and things I do to keep the guilt and the waistline at bay. As a result, I eat my little heart out and enjoy the fruits of all the family’s labor.
1. Stick to a healthy diet at least a week prior to feasting. I am always really mindful about what I am eating, but even more so when I know my big cheat day(s) are coming up. Being disciplined before helps me to not feel guilty for indulging in some more dense foods on the big day.
2. Get your work out on! Gym hours are a little unpredictable around the holidays and you may find that they are closing earlier or even closed completely on certain days. Be diligent in exercising that way your rest days can be the days the gym is closed. I love working out and it has been a total journey for me. I started out taking a few classes here and there and have a total new attitude towards exercise so I definitely recommend them! Most classes last approximately and hour and are really impactful. If you are lucky like me, you will also end up with some really amazing new girlfriends that make it even more fun to do.
3. Have Fun! Life is really too short so eat the pie. Have it for breakfast and blame it on the holiday. I really enjoy eating good food but I also enjoy working out and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. As I mentioned in point #2, I get to do it all with really great friends and family so it’s a win-win for me!
We are basically down to one week til Thanksgiving and I can hardly believe it! I feel like I have so much to do and absolutely no days to get it done! Let me elaborate for a second: In my family, all the married women have meal responsibilities for all major holidays. The menu is divided among us so no one person is overwhelmed or burdened and can still enjoy the day of celebration. Somehow, for my first two years of marriage I have been without responsibilities. I think it’s mostly because my mom and I count ourselves as one and we are really good about dividing and conquering anything that falls on her plate. Welllll fun time is over and I’m officially in the big girls club. I have my own dishes to worry about including but not limited to: eggs (because I forgot to mention we start Turkey day with a full breakfast / brunch spread), french bread casserole (i’m going to try and post this recipe later this week because it’s phenomenal!!!), and hot chocolate.
Add all that to baby shower planning, work travel, hockey games and regular work and blogging as usual and you can see why I’m needing a few more hours tacked on to each day. Luckily, the one thing that is super easy for me is dressing for all of our meals and events. Our families are super casual and never focus on any type of formalities so it’s easy to throw on something comfortable, warm and stretchy so we can focus on the fellowship and time together.
Today’s Thanksgiving outfit inspo is one of my all time favorites! I’m not usually a fan of red. I just don’t really consider it one of my good colors. For some reason this year I am particularly drawn to it. This flannel button up top is super soft and is a great way to add in red without feeling like a bright cherry. Keep it simple with some high rise jeans and layer on a plushy sherpa vest for casual warmth. You’ll look put together with the third piece but wont have to deal with the shoulder restraints of a jacket or blazer. You can’t see them but I threw on my new duck boots to give it an authentic outdoorsy feel.
I know I know I preach all the time about how I believe in one holiday at a time and you are probably thinking “Thanksgiving is next, wtf is she posting Christmas gifts for?!” Well, I would say that I’m also a believer in smart shopping and getting the best deals without being trampled by the masses. I am proud to say that although my friends and neighbors have decorated, my house is still void of anything relating to jolly old Saint Nick and I intend to keep it that way until November 25th. But, I digress, back to my “smart shopping” because that’s what we all care about right?! I am starting a series of Holiday gift guides and (obvi) today is the first installment. For you smart shoppers on a budget, all the gorgeous items below can be purchased for under $50. There are so many cute things to choose from and some items with serious value (see Jo Malone set and Bauble Bar Earring Duo) and some with amazing philanthropic values / incentives like Headbands of Hope (read about their mission here). Everything is linked below and all available online but if you are needing some gifts sooner or just want to get your list conquered earlier, you can stop by the Southern Christmas Show here in Charlotte (tix here) and visit all the amazing booths they have spread across three buildings at the Park Expo. Be sure you stop by Headbands of Hope with this coupon to get $5 off your purchase of $30 or more. I picked up some headbands for myself from Jess and her awesome team at their cute booth (#3226) to style for holiday parties and Christmas cards.
These are all items that I would love to get and feel confident in giving to my inner circle so I hope they help inspire you this year and make your shopping trips a little easier!
Hey friends! How was your weekend?! Mine was pretty busy but also really great. My mother in law came in town and we spent Saturday with my mom doing some shopping and eating around Charlotte. We started at Southpark Mall, headed over the Phillips Place for lunch then back to Gastonia for some chill time before I departed for my bff’s baby shower. To say I was exhausted yesterday was an understatement but it was so awesome to spend quality time with so many people I love. This weekend was also the first weekend I truly felt cold! Temps have been slowly dropping around here but it got down int he 30s and I was reaching for everything to keep me warm including these faux leather leggings, OTK boots and my fave hat. Side note: what do you guys think of hats and short hair?! I was really nervous to even try it on after making the big cut but I think I’m liking it!
What I am really loving are these leggings! They are a nice change in sheen and texture from your basic knit leggings and because they aren’t cotton, they don’t breathe as much and keep me nice and warm when the wind is blowing. I have had them for years and love the fit and quality and how they go with so many different tops and shoes – definite wardrobe staple. My lace up top is really soft and super cute! I love how the lacing is the same material as the shirt and is thicker than some other lace details on tops out there right now. Also- this one is only $18 and is the perfect olive color. I’m totally obsessed with olive right now. It plays like a neutral but still gives chic color to an outfit.
I hope you guys have an easy Monday, but if it gets you down, just remember it’s the last full week of work before Thanksgiving!! I know I’m looking forward to some much needed vacay time.
Good Morning loves! Who’s still suffering from the time change?! Let me be the first to raise my hand. I’ve been in a total funk this week and cannot seem to get enough sleep! Luckily the coffee has bee flowing and it has been strong. Speaking of coffee, did you know today is buy 1 get 1 free holiday drinks at Starbucks?! This isn’t an ad but just one coffee lover sharing the love with my fellow coffee friends. Stop by from 2-5pm to get your free drink! They recommend sharing the second cup with a friend, but if you’re feeling the need for 2, there’s no judgement here!
So about today’s look. Let me tell you about my new fave cold shoulder sweater!!! This thing is unreal comfy, super chic with its trendy cold shoulder detail and perfect black color. Given my funk of a time change mood, I am not always in the spunky mood to put together something more thoughtful or “forward” if you will (forgive me- I’m human) and this sweater has saved me. For today’s look I paired it with some dark jeans and cool loafers for more of a “boyfriend / menswear” look but have been pairing it with ripped jeans and leather leggings too! I’ve been pretty into simpler jewelry lately and these gold bar earrings have been on major repeat. At only $8 how can you not be totally obsessed!?!
Hope you guys have a happy Thursday! It’s almost the weekend.
