Choosing a construction theme birthday party for Wally’s second birthday was a no-brainer. For the past 6 months, he has been so into construction trucks, tractors & Rubble from Paw Patrol (IFKYK). Since Rubble is the construction pup, it was super easy to blend them all together for a construction themed party with a side of Paw Patrol vs a character party. Wally loved his construction theme birthday party and had so much fun playing with all the diggers and dump trucks. He was even more excited to keep them all once they were done being used as party decor. I’m equally excited to feature my sweet boy’s birthday as this month’s post for #RHentertains.

Shop Construction Theme Birthday Party Outfits for the Family

I started planning Wally’s birthday pretty early this year so choosing the theme was the hardest part. Earlier this summer when I started trying to figure out a theme for this party he didn’t show too much interest in them. I had it narrowed down to a Buzz Lightyear (two infinity & beyond) theme and the construction birthday party theme. After chatting with my mom and doing some preliminary shopping for both themes, I settled on the construction. From there it was really easy.

Decorations

There are so many great invitation templates, decorations, and party favors for a construction theme birthday party. I had the most luck shopping Etsy and Amazon. It also helped that both my dad and Wes work in the construction/home improvement fields. They had lots of tools, ladders, and other items available to use as decorations. At the last minute, I printed off my brother’s blueprints and used them to fill the empty wall under the balloon arch.

Speaking of balloon arches, how fabulous is this construction-themed one from The Poppin Peony?! Their balloon garland kits are beyond fab and so easy to put together. They provide everything you need except a balloon pump. Since there are about 60 balloons in each kit, I recommend using the double electric pump from Amazon. It’s up to you on how you prefer to inflate the balloons but this was the easiest for me. Our custom balloon garland was the focal point of our decor and really made the room come to life.

Since we kept things small and socially distanced due to the coronavirus, I didn’t focus too much on purchasing more decor. Instead, I gathered up all of Wally’s construction trucks and toys and used them as centerpieces and food table decor. At the last minute I snagged a roll of caution tape from Walmart and wrapped our columns with it and used the excess for the goodie bag ladder for the kids.

Food

Since we did scale back this year, especially compared to last year’s mega first birthday party/house warming party, I opted for heavy hors d’oeuvres instead of a full dinner. I set the food up on a large table inside and all the seating, kid table, and games outside. We were originally expecting rain for the party but it ended up being the most beautiful day so we took full advantage of it.

The main dish was our fave: a Chick-fil-A nugget tray, accompanied by a veggie plate, charcuterie board and lots of snacks and treats. I planned all the “fun” food for the kids, but it was really fun hearing all the adults talk about how some candies were their childhood favorite and how long it had been since they last indulged. I’ve included a full list of the food and snacks below along with the fun construction themed names we gave them.

The cake was my favorite thing on the table! I looked into several local bakeries before remembering Edible Art from our wedding cake tasting days. They were so great to work with and really brought my vision to life and delivered an awesome cake within the budget I wanted to stay in. Did I mention this cake was SOOO GOOD!? I think Wes and I enjoyed it more than Wally boy and talked about how incredible the cake and the frosting was for days after the party. If you are local to Charlotte or live within driving distance, I highly recommend Edible Art for specialty or custom cakes.

Party Favors

The finishing touch and party send-off was a lot of fun! I don’t think I’ve mentioned it in a blog post before, but gift-giving is one of my love languages. I absolutely love it and put a lot of thought effort into the gift (or goodie bag) and the presentation. That being said, now you know I really had to control myself from buying every adorable themed item for the kids’ goodie bags. There are so, so many goodies for this theme. Ultimately I settled on these really cute reusable bags from Amazon and filled them with a construction hat, truck shaped crayons, a hard hat cookie, a mini construction truck, a slap bracelet, bubble tape, and a traffic cone cup. If you want a different bag or style to fit your party try these bags or these tool boxes.
